Of all of the new lures I’ve seen this year, one of the ones that I’m most excited to try is Jackall’s Chan Wake, mostly because I expect that fishing it will be a bit like déjà vu all over again.
The Chan Wake looks almost exactly like the old Japan-only Shimano Triple Impact, a lure that Shin Fukae told me about in 2007. I’ve been hoarding them off of Asian resellers on eBay over the past decade and in its various permutations it’s a lure that has produced not only on many of my local waters, but also in Mexico, Texas, California, Florida and New Hampshire.
Now it appears that the cat is out of the bag, and while I expect that the Jackall engineers took a lot from their compadres at Shimano (the two companies are under the same ownership umbrella), I know that not all Triple Impacts were created equally. There were certain sizes and vintages that clearly outperformed the others, and despite some beat up paint jobs, I’m not taking those best ones out of the boat any time soon.
