When traveling to tournaments or other events, I’m often asked about the colorful wrap on my Chevy Suburban and Ranger boat including how it is applied, the cost and who designs it.

Our sport has come a long way in the 20 years I’ve been fishing professionally. I’ve had large logos on my boats before, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d have a large decal like this on my Ranger or Suburban.

Many, La. – For GYCB pro Judy Wong, along with the rest of the WBT field, the new year did not bring good news. While they’d been gearing up for another season, BASS decided that the women’s tour was no longer a viable entity and pulled the plug.

While some had speculated that the WBT was on a short leash, Wong was surprised: “I didn’t expect it to be canceled,” she said. “The numbers were down a little and I’m sure it had something to do with the economy, but they had already announced the schedule and Academy was there to stand behind it. I assumed it was fishing as usual, so I was surprised and disappointed.”

Sometimes it’s the smallest lures in a tackle box tray that leave us with some of our most treasured fishing memories.

I have memories about one I’d like to share.  I’ve written before about this little lure that’s been such a memory builder for me.  I catch myself smiling every time I do so.  I really enjoy sharing the details of the first time it happened.  I’ve got to believe the bassin’ man who enjoys bamboozling those bigmouth boogers as much as I do will relate to it.

The goal (or dream) of nearly every tournament angler is to win one event a year and back that up with a solid performance the rest of the year in order to make a championship.  To win two events in a year is not just a dream but a near impossibility when you consider today’s competition.

Note
: This is the first installment of a periodic feature from veteran professional angler Bernie Schultz of Gainesville, Fla. Schultz is a member of the Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits National Pro Staff and a BASS Master Elite Series competitor.

People often ask what I do during the off-season, and my life, when I’m not on the water, pretty much revolves around family or sponsor obligations.

Both of my sons are involved in sports and various academic events, and that makes for a nice transition…to get out of the boat after a long season and watch them play ball. The truth is I would rather do that than fish. I love it!
