Greetings from Yamamoto Central!

Spring is exactly one week away – but being back out on the water yesterday for the first time in a long time, winter was the last thing on my mind. For those of you who’ve been gazing longingly at your winterized boats, lovingly organizing and reorganizing your tackle as you wait for the nearest pond to thaw out, I feel your pain.

I don’t get out much. Most of the time you’ll find me at my desk, plinking away on my keyboard. So when I do get out I kind of make a big deal out of it. I’m sure I was more excited about going fishing the past two days than the two tournament anglers I went out to cover (my good friend Derek Yamamoto and my trusty fellow co-worker/pro angler Ron Colby).

Truth be told it’s still a bit chilly out here in northern Arizona and yet we managed to walk back into the office with a bit of a sunburn. The air temp is warming up out here but the water’s still too cold for predictable fish activity.

Not a problem – after finding no fish on day one, we made a longer run on day two and, as they say in the biz, we wacked ‘em. Lake Powell is not well-known for its production of Amistad/Falcon/Clear Lake/CA Delta sized fish. But our smallies are fighters, the fishing is fun and the scenery is simply fantastic.

The guys worked hard for the fish they got, but we left the lake optimistic; the water is getting warmer by the day and before you know it, they’ll be moving up to spawn. For those of you imprisoned in your homes, chained to the stove or radiator, hold on! To get you all warmed up, we’ll be posting some spawning pieces. Taking a closer look at the different stages (and stages withinthe stages) should motivate you to start re-spooling and re-tying.

As much as we miss our print publication, I’m happy to report we’ve provided twice the content in the year and two months since the Inside Line went digital. We’re working hard to provide you with interesting, entertaining, and educational material – so let us know what you think! What do you like about the site? What’s missing? What would you like to see more of? Drop a letter to the editor and share your thoughts with us.

As cold as it was for pro anglers blasting off this week down at Amistad and over at Table Rock, the rewards (nice sacks for both locations) seem to make up for the brutal conditions. I’ll take a sunburn any day over sitting here in the corner and missing out on all the action.

Remember that “excited as a little schoolgirl” feeling you get when you’re making that first launch of the season? Wait for it – it’s coming. Spring might technically be a week away, but I don’t see that holding any of us back.

We’ll see you out on the water,
Heidi Roth
