Hooks for Texas Rigging a Senko

Dear Pro Staff,

What size wide gap hooks should I use when Texas rigging the 5", 6" and 7" Senkos?

Jerry "Bubba" Puckett says:

 Greetings from Arizona,

Thanks for the Senko question, we appreciate the interest. With the 4" and 5" Senkos, hook size is largely a function of the type action you are trying to impart - the faster sink-rate you're after, the larger hook you use. Typically 2/0 or 3/0 for the 4", and 3/0-5/0 for the 5" model.

Several hook designs work well for these two baits, although most of our Pro Staffers opt for the Yamamoto Sugoi hooks, which are perfectly designed for Tex-posed rigging.

With the 6"-7" Senkos, the story changes, because of the bulkiness of the lure bodies. With these baits we suggest an extra wide gap hook design, such as the Gamakatsu EWG or Superline hooks - both in 5/0 for these two very large baits. You may, however, "Wacky-rig" these big Senkos with any straight-shank, wide gap worm hook. The Wacky-rig has been very effective with the Senkos.

As for the 7" Senko (9X series), it should be reserved for the very largest fish, such as those found in Mexico, and certain trophy fisheries here in the States - that bait is huge.

I hope this proves to be of help, and good luck with one of our hottest baits!
