Split Shot Hooks - For Lures or Live Bait?
| Dear Pro Staff,
The #53 Split Shot hooks sound great for wormin', but I was wondering how they would work dead-sticking. How would they compare to the Gamakatsu and Owner circle hooks? The point doesn't seem to be turned in as much as the "classic" circle hooks. How do you think these would work using live shrimp under a poppin’ cork, or bottom fishing with shrimp or mullet for flounder?
Thanks,

Cap'n Chuck Duggins says:
In practice, I think you’ll find the Yamamoto version of this hook style to be just as viable. And although we’re using largely artificial bait instead of live or cut bait, the techniques you describe are just about exactly how we use them most of the time! The biggest point (to me) of the Yamamoto Split-shot hook is that if the fish swallows the bait or lure, and they frequently do, most of the time the hook will pull or slip out of the throat or stomach area. And, they will keep slipping until they get to the bony area just inside the lips. Then, they go no further . . . neither does the fish. It's caught at that point, as long as you do not set the hook! There is no practical difference in my opinion between lures and bait in this respect.
