Best Jig Heads for Single Tail Grubs

To: Pros@gyb.baits.com

Hi, I have just started using single tail grubs from 3" to 5", and I am wondering what the best jig and hook combos are for such grubs.

Thanks.

Russ Bassdozer says:

Hi. It's good to hear that you are starting to try the single tail grubs. If I was forced to choose only one soft plastic lure to use for the rest of my life, that would be it.

Gary Yamamoto has custom-designed several styles of jig heads to match these grubs. They all feature premium quality Owner jig hooks. They're thin yet strong steel in hook sizes that work best with the 4" grubs. Best of all, the points are precision sharp right out of the package, and the point retains its sharpness well during use.

  • Round Head (series 42): This is best for swimming the grubs slowly just above bottom, touching down only occasionally. It features a great lead collar that really holds the bait in place. It comes in 1/16, 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 oz. All sizes are on an Owner 3/0. As a general rule with the round head, always strive to use the lightest one that gets your grub to the desired level.  Selection of the lightest size helps the round head float over snags on the bottom whereas one that's too heavy will get snagged more often. I prefer this head with the unskirted 3" to 5" Single Tail Grub. On the unskirted grub, I like to swim it OVER the bottom rather than crawl it ON the bottom.
  • Hula Grub Head (series 35): It comes in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 oz, all with 4/0 Owner hooks. I use Hula Grub Heads right on the bottom in relatively snag-free areas. The line tie is right on the nose, making it better able to shed weeds that it encounters on bottom. It also has a flattened belly which helps stabilize the hookpoint upright without rolling over and snagging such as a round head will when it lays on the bottom. The flattened belly also keeps it from slipping into small crevices that a more streamlined jig would slip into and snag. Crawl or swim the Hula Grub head over fairly open bottom.
  • Weedless Jig Head (series 66): Think of this head as being substantially similar to our Hula Head sporting a fiber weedguard. it comes in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 oz with a 5/0 Owner hook. I prefer to clip off up to half the fibers to make it easier to hook fish. Clip the remaining fibers short to barely cover the hookpoint, and spread them out to protect the hook all around from snagging. Like the Hula Head, the design has a flattened belly and it bounces over wood and rocks well.
  • Flat Eye Special (series 67): This is a specialized model in our 67 series It's a fiberguard head with the hook eye coming straight out the front of the jig. It's the best for brush and weeds. it sports an Owner hook (3/0) and is only available in 1/4 oz.

Those are the heads that I use to cover the gamut from swimming over open bottom (Round Head), crawling on open bottom (Hula Head), fishing rocks, logs, stumps (Weedless Jig), and prospecting in brush and weeds (Flat Eye Special).

As far as rigging hooks for grubs, the grub body is typically too short and fat to use most rigging hooks on the market. One offset shank hook that works with grubs is the Owner Rig'n Hook (series 58) which is also short and fat in construction just liker a grub. I also use our Split Shot (series 53) to do exactly that - split shot grubs for suspended bass.
