Best Hooks to Rig Single Tail Grubs

To: Russ Bassdozer, pros@gyb.baits.com

Mr. Bassdozer, I purchased a pack of the Sugoi hooks (EWG) in 2/0 a few  weeks ago. I planned to use them with the 5" single tail  grub.  I followed the pictures on the package and rigged the bait as shown. I found on fast striking hook sets (when the bass hit the bait as soon as it hit the water), the bait was pulled from the fish's mouth.  That has never happened
with the regular 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook with the same grub. Is there a special technique for the Sugoi hook or should I move up to the 3/0 size?

Thanks, John

Russ Bassdozer says:

Hi John,

It's good to hear from you. The Sugoi hook is what I call "gap limited" for the 5" single tail grub. The grub body is a bit too short and fat for it. The Sugoi hook is better suited for plastics with a longer, thinner body than the 5" grub.

As you have found out, an extra wide gap hook is better for the short, fat grub bodies. The best one in my opinion is the Owner Rig'n Hook because the length of this hook shank is shorter than usual, which better matches the shorter body of a grub. The Owner Rig'n Hook is also made of heavier wire which adds more "keel" to help stabilize the wobbly grub on the retrieve so it does not spin too much.

I always rig a grub with the curly tail pointing up which adds further stability, however, I typically rig tail down on jigheads where a destabilized, spinning grub is not a problem. The tail-down rigging generates stronger vibration.

One last thing, because of the heavy hook wire on the Owner Rig'n hook, be conscious you do not use a rod which is too light to set the Owner Rig'N Hook, John. If you are not connecting solidly on the hooksets, chances are good that your rod is too light for the hook.
