Fluorocarbon Line for Deep Jigging Spoons
| Dear Pro Staff,
We were jigging large Hopkins Slab spoons (3/4 oz to 1 oz) on 10/4 Fireline and 10 and 14lb Spiderwire. The spoons were attached to a snap swivel, which was tied to the line using a Palomar knot. After 25-50 casts the line would break at the Palomar knot, if we had a light snag or a hit. To combat this, we retied every 20 casts or so. Troublesome, but better than losing our lures. We tried a 12lb mono leader on the Fireline (double uni-knot) but it didn't work much better. Do you have any suggestions on line or knots for jigging these heavy slab jigs? I've had good luck with the superlines in the past but they didn't seem to hold up to the repeated shock of this heavy jigging.
Thanks!

Wayne Gustaveson says:
Superlines are really good for low stretch and good hookups in deep water. I have not figured out the poor knot strength and proper knot to tie so I gave up on them. I went to the new Yamamoto Fluorocarbon low stretch line. Fluorocarbon has the same low stretch characteristics as the superlines, with the additional benefits of low visibility and user-friendly knot strength of monofilament.
