What Colors for South Carolina & Georgia?

Dear Inside Line,

This has been driving me crazy guys. I fish mainly South Carolina and Georgia lakes which are fairly clear to stained lakes. Every time I get ready to finally place an order for an upcoming tournament something comes up and I have to wait. You have so many colors to chose from my head is spinning.

Hi Greg, Since I fish so many North Georgia lakes, and many are bordered by South Carolina, I think I can at least give you a few tips for starters. You can then narrow down your selections, or add to them as you choose. Colors that have an asterisk ( * ) are the colors I most often use.

Most of the lakes are very clear, and deep, with more stained water in the rivers. I use the following colors mostly for the Series 9 5" Senkos in the clear water: 031*, 036, 169*, 237, and the new 240*.

For grubs, I use either the 5" (97 series) or 6" ( 99 series) hula grubs in these colors: 031, 140, 169, 176*, 213, 208*, 237*, 297*, and of course the new 240*.

I also like to use the 16 and 12 series twin tail grubs with an 11 series skirt in a matching or contrasting color. Best colors seem to be : 176*, 140*, 231*, 168, 297*, and 208*.

One more tip for the Senkos... while white will always work, often it is the color everyone is throwing. I have found, that color 169, is more effective and will catch better fish, and often in deep open water over creek channels and ledges or on points and humps.

Many of these lakes also have a huge population of blueback herring in addition to the shad, so a bait with a blue hue will often draw a lot of strikes as well. The new 240 works amazingly well, as does the 031.

If you need any additional information or suggestions, don't hesitate to ask. For Hartwell, I suggest using a 169 color in March and April around the lower end near humps, and in pockets where the wind is blowing. Don't expect as many bites as some other baits, but every fish I have caught has been over 4 lbs., and I have caught two over 6. Not bad considering I only started using the Senko on Hartwell this year! I can't wait for next spring!
