Guide to Yamamoto Color Selection
By Russ Bassdozer

July 3, 2001

With 40 models, 111 colors, and 1,800 items in inventory, I'm willing to bet you that Gary Yamamoto offers the most stock choices of any soft bait company in the world. Now 1,800 choices sounds super...until it's time to pick just one to tie on the end of your line! Well, it's no wonder I get many emails and questions asking about color selection. Help is here! This article guides you to a rainbow of my favorite color choices. Please enjoy.

Building Blocks. The colors in this group are my building blocks. A bit boring to look at, but they're fish catchers, not eye catchers. Unlike some of the flashier or fancier colors which are only available in limited series, these building blocks come in many styles of Gary Yamamoto baits. 187 shines like a light bulb in clear water under bright skies. 150 gains confidence when the water or sky is a little darker. I consider 176, 286, 194 and 297 to be great crawdad colors. 020 works day or night.

Clears / Whites.
I tend to use these colors as minnows, shiners, or shad. 031 and 036 are my favorites in this group. 168, 237 and 239 are also great baitfish patterns. 901 for 5" Senkos. 322 is a new color Senko Lite.

Smokes.
187 and 150 have already been noted up top. I have always had the best of luck with 163 and 200. Who knows why? I tend to use the other colors in this group as baitfish. I call 214 bluegill and 180 perch or panfish. Chartreuse tail dip goes far to complete either illusion. I call 145 alewife or herring. I call 177 silver shad and 166 gold shad. 238, 135 and 22 are similar to 177.

Chartreuse / Yellows.
In this group, 156 is my favorite in smaller baits for smallmouth. 066 and 530 in bigger baits for bigmouth. 169 becomes a deadly fluorescent lime from so much green flake in it. 906 for 5" Senkos. 192 and 321 are colors for the new Senko Lites.

I've pointed out a few favorites. But truth is I've caught bass on all 111 colors listed above. Each has held the spotlight at some fond and memorable time and place, and I often smile upon recalling different colors favored by different friends who shared them with me. I hope you'll smile too when you're landing big bass on some of the colors I've shared with you here.
